The assistance is being provided to support fishing communities during the annual marine fishing ban, from April 15 to June 14 this year, imposed to facilitate fish breeding. The NDA coalition government had promised enhanced financial support for fishermen in its election manifesto and doubled the assistance from ₹10,000 provided under the previous government to ₹20,000 per family.
Officials said the government had distributed ₹243 crore to 121,433 fishermen families during 2024-25, while this year's allocation has been increased to ₹262 crore, covering nearly 9,400 additional beneficiaries. In the last two years alone, the government has extended a total of ₹505 crore in aid to fishing families during the fishing ban period.
